The Tampa Bay Rays placed ace Shane McClanahan on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a shoulder impingement. Brandon Lowe joined McClanahan on the injured list with a right triceps contusion. The second baseman was hit by a pitch Friday and hasn't played since. He was placed on the 10-day IL, retroactive to Sunday. In corresponding moves, the Rays recalled infielder/outfielder Vidal Brujan and right-hander Calvin Faucher. McClanahan, 25, has been stellar in his second season in the major leagues. He is 11-5 with a 2.20 ERA and earned his first All-Star nod this season. Lowe, 28, is batting .234 with eight home runs and 25 RBIs in 61 games. Brujan, 24, is batting .167 with two home runs and 15 RBIs in 46 games with the Rays this season. After a tumultuous 2021 season, Washington hopes new coach Kalen DeBoer leads them back to some a sense of normalcy Saturday night as they open the season against an apparently overmatched visiting Kent State. Yet, a year ago, Washington's season launched with a stunning 13-7 loss to Montana and then-coach Jimmy Lake and the Dawgs never regained their footing on the way to a 4-8 season. DeBoer, formerly at Fresno State, is the fourth Washington head coach in four seasons. Chris Petersen departed after the 2019 season and was replaced by Lake -- but after the terrible start, Lake was under fire all season and was terminated in November following a sideline incident in which he was seen shoving one of his players -- and was replaced on an interim basis by defensive coordinator Bob Gregory for the rest of the 2021 season. Last week DeBoer named Michael Penix Jr., a transfer from Indiana, as the starting quarterback, and Wayne Taulapapa, a graduate transfer from Virginia, as the No. 1 ...

The way Texas Rangers ace Martin Perez is pitching, he doesn't need many runs to pick up wins. Even so, the All-Star certainly will take all the support he can get. Texas provided Perez with plenty of backing in his last outing, a 16-4 win over the Colorado Rockies on Aug. 24 in Denver. The task for the left-hander will be more challenging on Wednesday afternoon in the Rangers' series finale against the high-powered Houston Astros in Arlington, Texas. The Astros claimed the first game 4-2 on Monday night, and they will look to sweep the two-game series. Perez (10-4, 2.69 ERA), one of the best starters in the American League this year, will go up against Houston right-hander Cristian Javier (7-9, 2.97). In Perez's start against the Rockies, he tossed six shutout innings, yielding four hits, walking one and striking out seven. Perez is 1-1 with a 3.43 ERA in three starts against the Astros this year, and 9-6 with a 3.09 ERA in 17 games vs. Houston in his career. Javier is 1-1...

Atlanta right-hander Kyle Wright will try to halt his team's three-game losing streak and log a major-league-leading 17th win when the Braves host the Colorado Rockies in the second game of a three-game series on Wednesday. Wright, the Houston Astros' Justin Verlander and the Los Angeles Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin all have 16 wins. Wright (16-5, 2.99 ERA) will be opposed by Colorado's Ryan Feltner (2-5, 5.87) on Wednesday. Wright has won each of his past three starts and nine of his past 10 decisions. In his latest outing, on Aug. 24 at Pittsburgh, he fired seven shutout innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out eight. He left after throwing 73 pitches when the Braves scored seven runs, four of them on a grand slam by Matt Olson that left the stadium and landed in the Allegheny River, in a long seventh inning. "I've never finished a game in the big leagues," Wright said, "so I would have loved to have gotten that. But runs are cool, too, ...

The Milwaukee Brewers will turn to right-hander Freddy Peralta to try to slow down Oneil Cruz and the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday afternoon in the rubber game of the three-game series. Peralta (4-3, 3.69 ERA) will start for Milwaukee, while the Pirates are expected to counter with right-hander Zach Thompson (3-10, 5.33). The Pirates rallied for a 4-2 victory Tuesday night as Cruz went 2-for-4 with a double, single, walk, two RBIs and a run scored. Pittsburgh snapped a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning when Rodolfo Castro drew a two-out walk with the bases loaded. Cruz's ninth-inning double provided the insurance run. Kolten Wong accounted for both Milwaukee runs with a two-run homer in the fourth that gave the Brewers a 2-1 lead. "Clearly, we've got to figure something out because we're not doing a good enough job," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said of Cruz. "I don't think there's any question about that. I think we all know he's a talen...

Celebrity rapper DaBaby’s show in New Orleans, on Friday September 2 at the Smoothie King Center has been canceled. A local New Orleans outlet said that low ticket sales were the reason why the show was canceled. The event reportedly saw sales of less than 500 tickets in an arena can hold 14,000 or more and ticket prices were $35. Those who have already bought tickets will be reimbursed.Although the website Nola reported that the cancelation was due to low sales, others provided different reasons for the cancellation, although none of them disputed the low sales. The agency is the artiste’s booking agency, according to the site xxlmag. Nearly 30 years after his coaching career began, Brent Venables will make his head-coaching debut Saturday when No. 9 Oklahoma hosts UTEP in Norman, Okla. "It's finally here," Venables said, referring more to the past nine months since he took over from Lincoln Riley as the Sooners' head coach. "It's game week and ... this doesn't ever get old. The excitement, the anticipation is real. This is what you work for." Venables, 51, is plenty familiar with his counterpart, UTEP's Dana Dimel. When Venables played at Kansas State in 1991-92, Dimel was the Wildcats' offensive line coach. "(Former Kansas State coach) Bill Snyder's one of the best offensive minds in the history of college football, in my opinion, and Dana, that's his root system," Venables said. "He's done a nice job wherever he's been. He's got his guys believing." The Sooners, finished 11-2 last season under Riley, who now the head coach at Sout...

Oregon State looks to build on the homefield advantage that worked wonders last season when Boise State visits on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams at Corvallis, Ore. The Beavers were 6-0 on their home turf in 2021 while going 7-5 overall and playing in their first bowl game since 2013. Oregon State beat Rose Bowl participant Utah and whipped Stanford by 21 points as part of the home success. Oregon State hasn't put together back-to-back winning seasons since 2012-13 when Mike Riley was head coach. But this season, the Beavers are shooting to shed their pushover labels. "We're tired of the narratives. We're tired of everybody overlooking Oregon State," Beavers linebacker Kyrei Fisher told reporters. "We're tired of them just saying, 'Oh, that's just another Oregon State team.' We want to be that dominant team that we know we can be." Boise State would like to make it a disappointing start for the Beavers. The Broncos hope...

UCLA softened its nonconference schedule considerably this season, yet the Bruins still will be on guard Saturday afternoon at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., with a visit from Bowling Green in the season opener for both teams. UCLA will be trying to replace a number of departed players, many of whom went on to the NFL, while Bowling Green returns nine starters on defense, as well as proven quarterback Matt McDonald. "He's obviously the guy we've got to focus on and stop," UCLA coach Chip Kelly said of McDonald, a redshirt senior and native of nearby Newport Beach, who is entering his third season as the starter for the Falcons. The Bruins will send an experienced starting quarterback onto the field on Saturday as well. Dorian Thompson-Robinson is set to begin his fifth season with the Bruins. He threw 21 touchdown passes last season, the same number he had in 2019, but cut his interceptions from that campaign in half to six. "I haven't changed anything go...

Minnesota's response was a winning streak built against sub-.500 teams. The Twins will seek their fifth straight victory on Tuesday night when they oppose the Boston Red Sox in the middle game of a three-game series at Minneapolis. A week ago, Minnesota followed up three straight home losses to the Texas Rangers by getting swept in a three-game series at Houston. The skid saw the Twins fall four games behind the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central. Now the Twins head into Tuesday trailing Cleveland by 1 1/2 games, though their rooting interest may be conflicted. Cleveland is hosting the Baltimore Orioles, who are one game ahead of Minnesota and two games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the third and final AL wild-card spot. The Cincinnati Reds want to make some highlights this season, and maybe center fielder TJ Friedl can show them how it's done. The Reds and Washington Nationals are rather desperate for good results. Carolina quarterback Sam Darnold was carted off the field after sustaining a left ankle injury in the third quarter of the Panthers' preseason finale against the visiting Buffalo Bills on Friday. The injury ends a preseason in which Darnold lost a battle for the Panthers' starting job to Baker Mayfield. Giancarlo Stanton had a two-run single and a bases-loaded walk in his return from a two-month absence and the New York Yankees scored early and often in a 13-4 shellacking of the host Oakland Athletics on Thursday. New York's Josh Donaldson collected three hits and scored four times in the opener of a four-game series. A person having a tattoo is already in danger of getting an infection from bacteria since the skin is broken, or they could develop hepatitis B or C if the equipment is not cleaned thoroughly. Recipients may also grow nodules, granulomas, or scar tissue around the tattoo over time. Nearly half of the tattoo inks used in the US may contain chemicals that cause cancer, a recent study says. 23 of the 56 common inks frequently used by American tattoo artists were found to contain potentially dangerous azo-compounds, according to State University of New York at Binghamton researchers who examined the inks. Although azo compounds are not harmful when they are chemically intact, bacteria or UV radiation can break them down into a different compound that is harmful to health. According to the study's principal author, John Swierk, very little is actually known about t...
