Boston's offense has been uncharacteristically quiet early this season, but the Red Sox could receive a boost with the return of designated hitter J.D. Martinez. Martinez is hoping to be in the lineup when the Red Sox continue a three-game series against the host Baltimore Orioles on Saturday. The veteran slugger has missed six of Boston's last nine games with left adductor tightness, but manager Alex Cora said Martinez could play Saturday and Sunday. "Just one more day," Cora said before Friday's game. "He went out there and ran and felt it a little bit. Like always, we're thinking here, 162-plus (games). One day that he takes today, probably, we're going to see him close to 100 percent." Boston won for just the second time in its last seven games on Friday, when Christian Arroyo hit a two-run homer in a 3-1 victory. Arroyo's 408-foot blast snapped Boston's six-game homerless streak, which marked the team's longest stretch ...
Norwegian second seed Casper Ruud dropped his first set before pushing back for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Slovakia's Alex Molcan on Thursday in the second round of the BMW Open in Munich, Germany. Ruud served six aces and saved five of eight break points in order to advance. In the quarterfinals he will face eighth seed Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands, who was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Belarusian Egor Gerasimov. Third seed Reilly Opelka wasn't as fortunate as Ruud. Germany's Oscar Otte upset the American in straight sets, 7-6 (4), 6-2. Otte overcame Oeplka's 10 aces by winning 32 of his 35 first-service points (91.4 percent). Otte will face Chile's Alejandro Tabilo in the quarters. Tabilo was ahead 6-2, 2-6, 4-1 when Frenchman Hugo Gaston retired. Millennium Estoril Open No. 1 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime rallied for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Spanish lucky loser Carlos Taberner in the second round in Estoril, Portugal. After Taberner won six stra...
Unvaccinated players are not barred from participating in Wimbledon, clearing the path for Novak Djokovic to defend his men's singles title in June. The CEO of All England Lawn Tennis Club, Sally Bolton, said Tuesday the tournament would not mandate vaccination against COVID-19, adding participants are not required to quarantine on arrival ahead of the tournament. "The requirements set up do not include mandatory vaccination," Bolton said. "It will not be a condition of entry for the championships this year." Wimbledon begins June 27, when Djokovic has a shot at becoming a seven-time champion on the grass court. Djokovic was in Australia and even practiced on the court after being sent to a quarantine hotel in a litigious tug of war with the top officials in the country. The Serbian ultimately was sent home because of his unvaccinated status. The matter played out in the court system as Australian officials flagged Djokovic for breaking quarantine prior ...
American Danielle Collins displayed little rust in her return to the court as she posted a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Puerto Rico's Monica Puig in the opening round of the Mutua Madrid Open in Spain. The sixth-seeded Collins missed the past four weeks after sustaining a neck injury during a quarterfinal run at the Miami Open last month. She recorded six aces and won 80 percent of her first-serve points on the clay on Friday. "When you go a little period where you aren't playing some matches, you almost feel a little bit rusty," Collins said afterward. "I just needed to be patient and try to get myself back into it." The 28-year-old Collins, who is ranked No. 8 in the world, won the final eight games of the 80-minute match. The Australian Open finalist eventually found her rhythm while the 28-year-old Puig, the 2016 Olympic gold medalist, struggled in the second set of her first match in 19 months after two surgeries on her right shoulder and bicep tendon....
The Miami Marlins have impressed Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais. "They are athletic in the field," he said. "But the name of the game for the Marlins is pitching. Very deep pitching staff. They are one of the most aggressive teams in the league throwing the breaking ball. "We'll have our work cut out for us." Servais said that before the Marlins beat the Mariners, 8-6, on Friday night in the opener of their three-game series in Miami. Miami has now won six straight games, the Marlins' longest streak since 2020. It's also the longest active win streak in the National League. "Pretty good night for our offense," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said after Friday's victory. The Marlins will go for seven straight wins on Saturday night, when they will start lefty Jesus Luzardo (1-1, 3.71 ERA). He is 1-0 with a 3.09 ERA in four career appearances against the Mariners, striking out 19 in 10 2/3 innings. But he's allowed ...
On Saturday, Warren Buffet lead Berkshire Hathaway reported its earnings for the first quarter of the year. Like many others, it posted a decline in earnings due to the slowdown in the nation's economy. The conglomerate makes its profit by the businesses it owns in various sectors such as insurance, railroads and utilities. The company's earnings declined by over 53 percent. All roads lead to Omaha, Nebraska as the shareholders headed there to hear the legendary chairman-investor at the company's annual meeting.Berkshire Hathaway’s net earnings were $5.46 billion. This is a decline of more than 53 percent as the company earned $11.71 billion, in the year earlier period. It also reported operating earnings at $7.04 which were flat year over year. The largest decline of over of almost 94 percent was due to the fall in the insurance underwriting business. The earnings in the year-earlier period were $764 million but the earnings in the first quarter was $47 million. However, th...
The Toronto Blue Jays have yet to lose a series this season, but the visiting Houston Astros will be out to change that in a three-game set that opens Friday night. Houston needed Jeremy Pena's 10th-inning homer on Sunday to salvage one win from a three-game home series against Toronto. The Astros went on to win three of four from the host Texas Rangers at Arlington, Texas, earning a 3-2 victory Thursday when Kyle Tucker hit a tiebreaking, pinch-hit homer in the eighth. The Blue Jays took three of four from the visiting Boston Red Sox, with Alek Manoah striking out seven in seven innings during a 1-0 victory on Thursday. The Blue Jays are 5-0-1 in their six series this season. They split a four-game set when they visited the New York Yankees from April 11-14. Toronto left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (0-1, 3.75 ERA) will oppose Houston right-hander Jose Urquidy (1-1, 5.52 ERA) in the opener on Friday. Urquidy pitched 5 2/3 innings against Toronto on Saturday and allowed two run...

On Friday, a documentary called “Concert Crush: The Travis Scott Tragedy” began screening in several cities in Texas. Travis Scott has been sued for the deaths and mayhem that resulted during his Astroworld concert in the Lone Star state last November and his team is calling the documentary which shows the tragic events that took place during and after the concert a money grab attempt. Movie director, Charlie Minn told AP that the documentary was not made as a hit piece against the Texan rapper. Instead, it was a recounting of the devastating tragedy. The documentary also includes actual plaintiffs who have sued Travis Scott as well as a host of others whom they blame for the tragedy. Attorney Ricardo Ramos, who is representing some of the plaintiffs, is also featured in the film.Travis Scott’s reps called it a “propaganda piece” and that’s not all they had to say. According to a report by TMZ Travis’ team called it a “farce” that was financed by the plaintiffs legal team and noted tha...
The Chicago Blackhawks enjoyed playing the spoiler role on Wednesday night when their 4-3 shootout victory over visiting Vegas helped to end the Golden Knights' playoff hopes. The Blackhawks (28-42-11, 67 points), already locked into a seventh-place finish in the Central Division, will look to end the regular season with another win when they visit the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night. The Sabres (31-39-11, 73 points) go into the final day of the season in fifth place in the Atlantic Division, one point ahead of the Detroit Red Wings and two points in front of the Ottawa Senators. But what makes the game special for Buffalo fans is that it will be the last one for popular broadcaster Rick Jeanneret. Jeanneret, a member of both the Sabres Hall of Fame as well as the Hockey Hall of Fame, has helped broadcast Buffalo games for 51 years dating to Oct. 10, 1971. Special commemorative "RJ's Last Call" T-shirts will be handed out to the first 10,000 fans at KeyBank Cente...
The rivalry doesn't carry the weight it did in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when the two clubs played for the American League championship four times. But whenever the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals play a series, it's one of the biggest of the season for Royals fans. The Yankees will travel to Kansas City on Friday night for the first game of a three-game series. The Yankees will hand the ball to Nestor Cortes (0-0, 1.15 ERA), while Kris Bubic (0-1, 14.14) will start for the Royals in a matchup of left-handers. The Yankees have won six straight games, all at home, and eight of their last nine. They defeated the Baltimore 10-5 Thursday to complete a three-game sweep of the Orioles. The Royals scored three times in the 10th inning Thursday to defeat the White Sox 5-2 and claim their first road series of the season. The Yankees have the best record in the American League, but they've played 13 of their 19 games at home. They're only playing .500 ball...
While the Washington Capitals know they are in the postseason, they might spend Friday night's visit to the New York Rangers sneaking an occasional peak at an out-of-town scoreboard to see how the Pittsburgh Penguins are doing. Washington (44-25-12, 100 points) will head into the postseason as the Eastern Conference's second wild card team or as the third-place team in the Metropolitan Division. Finishing as the second wild card sends them into a series with the Florida Panthers, and finishing third in the division grants them a meeting with the Rangers (51-24-6, 108). Washington is one point behind the Pittsburgh Penguins, who own 45 wins and 36 regulation wins -- one more than the Capitals. The Penguins close their season Friday by hosting the Columbus Blue Jackets in a game that starts at the same time as Washington's visit to New York. Whomever the opponent next week, the Capitals would like to head into the postseason playing better. Washington went 6-1-0 from ...
Nikita Kucherov and captain Steven Stamkos will aim to set franchise records on Friday night as the Tampa Bay Lightning conclude their regular season against the New York Islanders in Elmont, N.Y. Kucherov scored a goal in his eighth straight game on Thursday after converting on the power play midway into the second period of Tampa Bay's 5-2 setback to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The streak by the 2018-19 Hart Trophy recipient matches the longest such run for the Lightning since Brian Bradley set the mark in the team's inaugural season of 1992-93. Kucherov, who has 10 goals and 11 assists during the eight-game point streak, had an assist in Tampa Bay's 4-1 win over New York on March 27. Thursday's loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Lightning (50-23-8, 108 points), who were unable to clinch the third seed in the Atlantic Division and a first-round clash against the second-seeded Toronto Maple Leafs. Tampa Bay can accomplish the feat on Friday with a w...
The Minnesota Wild have a lot on the line during the last night of the NHL regular season. Their opponent knows its fate and simply can be a spoiler. The Wild host the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night in St. Paul, Minn. The Central Division rivals each went past regulation on Thursday, with Minnesota posting a 3-2 win in overtime over Calgary while Colorado dropped a 5-4 decision in a shootout to Nashville. The Avalanche (56-18-7, 119 points) saw their bid for the Presidents' Trophy and guaranteed home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs end with the loss. Minnesota (52-22-7, 111 points) can clinch second place in the Central Division with at least one point on Friday. The Wild also can capture that spot should the St. Louis Blues (49-21-11, 109 points) fail to defeat the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday. The Blues hold the tiebreaker over the Wild with a 43-36 edge in regulation wins. Colorado has posted a 2-0-1 record against Minnesota this season. The Avalanche saw...
So many Calgary Flames players have enjoyed reaching new standards this season en route to claiming the Pacific Division title. Now, their coach can breathe rare air as the Flames (50-20-11, 111 points) finish their regular season on the road against the Winnipeg Jets (37-32-11, 85 points) on Friday. Darryl Sutter needs one more victory to reach 700 for his career, which would move him into a tie with Mike Babcock for 10th on the league's all-time list. "Not many guys. How old is the league?" Sutter said. "Coaches are judged on three things: Stanley Cups, wins, playoffs. That's, at the end of the day, what counts." The Flames, who will face either the Nashville Predators or Dallas Stars to kick off the playoffs, are coming off a 3-2 overtime loss to the Minnesota Wild on Thursday. Although their playoff berth is secure, the Flames have not been coasting at season's end. Calgary gave the Wild -- who are fighting for home-ice advantage in their com...
The Dallas Stars clinched the final spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs by earning a point for a 4-3 overtime loss to the visiting Arizona Coyotes on Wednesday. Travis Boyd scored from in front at 1:43 of the extra frame for the Coyotes (24-50-7, 55 points), who erased a 3-0, third-period deficit to force overtime. Anton Stralman, Shayne Gostisbehere and Barrett Hayton scored while Harri Sateri made 26 saves for Arizona, which posted its second straight victory. Hayton also had two assists while Gostisbehere contributed one helper. Tyler Seguin had a goal and an assist, Jani Hakanpaa and Miro Heiskanen scored and Joe Pavelski logged two assists for the Stars (45-30-6, 96 points). Scott Wedgewood made 33 saves. Hakanpaa struck on the Stars' first shot of the game to give the hosts a 1-0 lead at 4:42 of the first period. Seguin won the faceoff back to defenseman Esa Lindell, who fed Hakanpaa for a one-timer from the blue line that hit a Coyotes player on its way to net. Arizon...
Taylor Ward finished a single shy of hitting for the cycle, helping lift the Los Angeles Angels to a 9-5 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday in Anaheim, Calif. Ward doubled leading off the first inning, hit a grand slam in the second, walked in the fourth and tripled in the sixth. With a chance to complete the cycle, Ward flied out in the seventh. The Angels' offense, however, was much more than Ward. Los Angeles had 14 hits in all, six of them for extra bases, en route to its fourth consecutive win. Mike Trout had two doubles and Shohei Ohtani had three hits, including a double. Ohtani also picked up the victory on the mound, giving up only a first-inning, two-run home run to Jose Ramirez during his five-inning stint. Ohtani (2-2) gave up five hits and one walk while striking out four and making 86 pitches. Cleveland, which has lost six in a row, finished with 11 hits, including another two-run homer by Ramirez in the eighth inning. The Guardians broke th...
Patrick Wisdom's two-run homer capped a three-run, 10th-inning rally as the visiting Chicago Cubs beat the Atlanta Braves 6-3 on Wednesday. The Cubs greeted Atlanta reliever Tyler Matzek with an RBI double by Willson Contreras to open the inning. Two batters later, Wisdom hit a 3-2 pitch over the center field fence for his third homer. The victory ended Chicago's two-game losing streak and evened the three-game series a game apiece. The winning pitcher was David Robertson (1-0), who pitched 1 1/3 innings and struck out three. Rowan Wick tossed a scoreless 10th inning to earn his first save. Matzek (0-1) struck out two but allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. The Cubs scored a run in the second inning on Nick Madrigal's infield grounder. The Braves loaded the bases with two outs in the second against Mark Leiter Jr., but he got Ozzie Albies on a comebacker to the mound to end the threat. Atlanta starter Charlie Morton was st...
Cristian Javier pitched effectively in his first start of the season and Kyle Tucker delivered a bases-clearing double that keyed the visiting Houston Astros to a 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday. Javier (1-0) tossed a season-high 84 pitches before the four-man bullpen completed what he started. Bryan Abreu struck out Adolis Garcia to close the sixth inning with the tying run on base. Ryne Stanek allowed a run in the ninth but stranded the tying run at third for his first save. Tucker, the fourth batter faced by Texas reliever Brett Martin (0-2) in the fifth, lined an opposite-field double to left-center field that drove home Chas McCormick, Michael Brantley and Yordan Alvarez and erased a 2-1 deficit. McCormick chased the Rangers' starter, right-hander Glenn Otto, with an infield single. Javier needed just 10 pitches to set the Rangers down in order in the first inning but encountered choppy waters in his second inning of work, a laborious 29-pitch frame. Ra...
Max Kepler hit two solo home runs, Joe Ryan pitched seven dominant innings and the Minnesota Twins stretched their winning streak to six games by blanking the Detroit Tigers 5-0 on Wednesday in Minneapolis. Kepler, who also homered in the series opener on Tuesday, has 12 career multi-homer games. Minnesota's Ryan Jeffers supplied a two-run homer and RBI double, while Trevor Larnach doubled twice and scored two runs. The only hit against Ryan (3-1) was a fourth-inning single by Miguel Cabrera. Ryan, who walked one and struck out nine, has given up just one run in his last three outings covering 19 innings. Joe Smith and Danny Coulombe tossed an inning apiece to finish off the shutout. Detroit starter Michael Pineda (1-1) gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings. He struck out two without issuing a walk. The Twins collected a walk-off victory on Tuesday when Tigers catcher Eric Haase made a throwing error in the ninth inning that capped a game-ending, two-run play. T...
Pittsburgh Penguins president/chief executive officer David Morehouse left his post Wednesday after 16 years with the club. During Morehouse's time in charge, the Penguins won three Stanley Cups. His exit comes less than a year after previous owners Ron Burkle and Mario Lemieux sold the team to Fenway Sports Group. "I want to thank Ron Burkle and Mario Lemieux for taking a chance on me in 2007 and giving this Pittsburgh kid the dream of a lifetime to run his hometown hockey team," Morehouse said in a statement. "During those 16 years I've been lucky enough that this never felt like a 'job.' It always felt like a partnership -- with ownership, players, coaches, staff, and Pittsburgh fans. We had some incredible times together, including three Stanley Cups and watching Pittsburgh turn into a true hockey town." Morehouse added, "I'm confident that the Penguins' future is in good hands with Fenway Sports Group. The new ownership group ...
Coming off five consecutive losing seasons since their latest postseason appearance, the Texas Rangers are in the midst of a long, arduous climb back to respectability. While dropping the third game of a four-game set to the visiting Houston Astros 4-3 on Wednesday, Texas committed the type of mental mistake that keeps losing teams at the bottom of the standings. The Rangers will look to bounce back Thursday to earn a split of the four-game series in Arlington, Texas. With Houston up 4-2 entering the bottom of the ninth, Willie Calhoun worked a leadoff walk and advanced to third base when Adolis Garcia followed with a double. Calhoun then failed to come home on a Jonah Heim ground ball to the right side of the infield. Instead of cutting the deficit to one run and allowing Garcia to take third with just one out, Calhoun froze. He later scored on a Brad Miller grounder to short, but Garcia was ultimately stranded at third representing the tying run. "It's always one m...
Boston right-hander Garrett Whitlock will start the finale of a four-game series Thursday afternoon as the visiting Red Sox pursue a split with the Toronto Blue Jays. Whitlock (1-0, 0.66 ERA) will face Toronto right-hander Alek Manoah (3-0, 2.00), who has won his past seven starts dating to last season. Whitlock needing to make the start is part of the problem for the struggling Red Sox. He is taking the rotation spot of right-hander Tanner Houck, who is unvaccinated for COVID-19 and as a result could not enter Canada. Moving Whitlock to a starting role was an easy decision, but the problem for Boston was replacing Whitlock's quality work in relief. It was evident in the first two games of the series, which Boston lost mostly because of an ineffective bullpen late in the late innings. Boston bounced back on Wednesday to win the third game of the series 7-1, ending a four-game losing streak behind six strong innings from starter Michael Wacha. Manager Aled Cora rejoined th...
Young Braves right-hander Kyle Wright will try to build on a great start when he opposes veteran Chicago left-hander Drew Smyly in the rubber game of a three-game series on Thursday in Atlanta. The Braves won the first game of the series 3-1 and the Cubs rebounded to win the second game 6-3 in 10 innings. The Braves are looking for their first series win of the season. Wright (2-0, 1.06) has allowed only two runs this season thanks to his ability to throw strikes. He's fanned 26 batters in 17 innings and walked only two. Wright struck out a career-high 11 batters in his last start against the Marlins on Friday. "This is how I envisioned every season starting," said Wright, the No. 5 overall pick of the 2017 draft. Wright had an important breakthrough against the Marlins. He had retired 11 in a row but loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth. Manager Brian Snitker came to the mound, but Wright said he felt strong and was allowed to stay in the game. He retired ...
On Wednesday, a large number of Washington D.C.’s elite gathered at the Washington National Cathedral. They had come to honor Madeleine Albright, the first female secretary of state of the nation. She had died of cancer, at the age of 84, on March 23. President Joe Biden, former presidents, leading foreign dignitaries, top officials of the Biden administration and others attended the service that began around 11 a.m. There were about 1,400 people preset at the service.Former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, Hillary And Chelsea Clinton, Michele Obama, speaker Nancy Pelosi and Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell attended. Others who attended included her family, current and former secretaries of state, military officials and many other dignitaries. Leaders from the European states who remember her role in bringing to an end factional wars when former Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia etc broke up to form smaller republics, were present to honor the 64th U.S. secretary of ...
Noah Dobson scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period Tuesday night for the visiting New York Islanders, who beat the Capitals 4-1 and prevented Washington from climbing out of an Eastern Conference wild-card spot. Ryan Pulock scored in the first period and Casey Cizikas and Anders Lee added unassisted goals later in the third for the Islanders (36-34-10, 82 points), who snapped a five-game losing streak. New York goalie Ilya Sorokin made 32 saves. Conor Sheary scored in the first for the Capitals (44-24-12, 100 points), who remained one point behind Pittsburgh in the race for third place in the Metropolitan Division. The Penguins (45-25-11, 101 points) lost to the Edmonton Oilers 5-1 on Tuesday. The fourth-place finisher in the Metropolitan will be relegated to the second wild card and a first-round date with the East's top seed, the Florida Panthers. The third-place finisher will play the second-place New York Rangers. Goalie Ilya Samsonov recorded 22 saves fo...
Patrick Sandoval threw seven scoreless innings and Mike Trout homered, doubled and drove in three as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Cleveland Guardians 4-1 on Tuesday night in Anaheim, Calif. It was the second consecutive scoreless start by an Angels starter against the Guardians. Michael Lorenzen threw six scoreless on Monday in a 3-0 win, and Sandoval did him one better. In fact, Sandoval (1-0) has not allowed an earned run all season. He gave up one unearned run in each of his first two starts, both of which lasted four innings. Sandoval threw 90 pitches Tuesday, striking out nine, walking one and giving up just two hits -- both singles. He became the first pitcher in Angels history to have 20 strikeouts and not allow an earned run in his first three starts in a season. The Angels lost the shutout in the ninth inning on Jose Ramirez's RBI double, ending a streak of 17 scoreless innings by the Guardians' offense. Angels closer Raisel Iglesias entered the game with ...
Max Comtois and Sonny Milano each had a goal and an assist for the visiting Anaheim Ducks in a 5-2 win against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday. Trevor Zegras, Josh Mahura and Zach Aston-Reese also scored, and Anthony Stolarz made 31 saves for the Ducks (31-36-14, 76 points). Brent Burns and Scott Reedy scored, and Kaapo Kahkonen made 26 saves for the Sharks (32-36-12, 76 points), who had won three of their previous four. Zegras scored the 23rd goal of his rookie season on a power play to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead at 4:05 of the first period. Zegras lifted a shot over Kahkonen's left shoulder and into the net. The puck lodged in the top of the net, leaving those on the ice unsure of its location for a few seconds. Troy Terry appeared to score for Anaheim a few minutes later when he swept in a loose puck from the crease, but a video review determined Terry used a kicking motion and the goal was disallowed. Comtois scored for the second straight game to extend the lead to 2...
Miguel Sano ripped a single into right field with two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth inning, and a throwing error moments later allowed the Minnesota Twins to prevail 5-4 over the Detroit Tigers in a wild finish Tuesday night in Minneapolis. Trevor Larnach stopped at third base after Sano's hit. Gio Urshela headed for third base after Sano kept running, prompting Tigers catcher Eric Haase to make a throw to third. But Haase's throw went high over third base and into left field, allowing two runs to score. Max Kepler went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs to lead the Twins at the plate. Urshela added a pair of hits as Minnesota won its season-high fifth game in a row. Javier Baez went 2-for-3 with a double, a homer and four RBIs for the Tigers, who dropped their third straight game. Twins right-hander Griffin Jax (1-0) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief. Tigers right-hander Gregory Soto (1-1) took the loss. He gave up back-to...
Although some economists from Deutsche Bank forecast a recession in the U.S. and say that it is impending others including Goldman Sachs and UBS Global Management do not believe in this gloom and doom scenario presented by the bank. The Fed is doing its bit by increasing interest rates in slow measures to ensure a soft landing but the bank is negative about this approach as well.Goldman SachsIn a report on Friday evening, Goldman Sachs economists said that “we do not need a recession but we probably do need growth to slow to a somewhat below-potential pace.” They concluded that this path raised recession risks. The company also said that bringing down high inflation and wage growth would be extremely challenging but declared that a recession was “not inevitable.” UBS Global Management Although the Fed has got into an inflation fighting stance by slowly increasing interest rates over time, UBS Global Wealth Management has a hopeful outlook. It hopes that economic expansion will incr...
Chris Bassitt and three relievers blanked the St. Louis Cardinals on three hits Tuesday as the visiting New York Mets continued their roll with a 3-0 victory. Bassitt (3-1) held the Cardinals to two hits in six innings. He struck out six batters and walked three. Drew Smith, Adam Ottavino and Edwin Diaz each worked a scoreless inning of relief. Diaz earned his third save. The Mets clinched their sixth straight series victory opening the season, setting a team record. They have won 11 of their last 14 games. The Cardinals lost their third straight game. They have scored just 14 runs in their last seven games. Cardinals starting pitcher Jordan Hicks was hit in his right wrist by Dominic Smith's liner in the second inning. He stayed in the game but then left with nobody out in the third inning due to his contusion. Hicks (1-2) allowed two runs on two hits and two walks in his two-plus innings. Bassitt worked out of trouble in the first inning after allowing Paul Goldschm...
David Peralta hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks pulled out a 5-3 victory Tuesday over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Five Arizona relievers combined to hold the Dodgers scoreless over the final five innings, with Ian Kennedy (1-1) getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning to earn the victory and Mark Melancon pitching a scoreless ninth inning for his third save. Will Smith had an early three-run double for the Dodgers and Trea Turner had a hit with two walks to extend his on-base streak to 36 games going back to September of last season. The Dodgers are 3-2 on a six-game road trip that ends Wednesday. The Diamondbacks got to Dodgers right-hander Brusdar Graterol (0-1) in the eighth inning. Cooper Hummell worked a four-pitch walk and Peralta hit a 1-1 home run to center field, his second of the season. The Dodgers got off to a fast start for the second consecutive game in the series. With one out in the first inning, Freddie Freeman ...
Anthony Rizzo hit three homers for the first time in his career as the New York Yankees recorded a 12-8 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. Rizzo hit a three-run drive with two outs in the third off Jordan Lyles (1-2) and connected for a two-run shot in the fifth as the Yankees raced out to a 6-0 lead. He then hit a solo drive just inside the right-field foul pole with two outs in the eighth; it was confirmed via an umpire's review. Rizzo's first multi-homer game as a Yankee gave him sole possession of the major league lead with eight homers. It was New York's first three-homer game since Kyle Higashioka went deep three times against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sept. 16, 2020.
