Boston Bruins forward Taylor Hall and Nashville Predators rookie forward Tanner Jeannot are a little lighter in the wallet on Wednesday. The NHL fined Hall $5,000 for roughing Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin during Tuesday's game. The league also docked Jeannot $2,000 for kneeing Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk in Tuesday's contest. Both fines were the maximum allowable under the league's collective bargaining agreement. Hall, 30, was assessed a minor penalty for roughing after punching Lyubushkin in the side of the head with 4:16 remaining in the second period. Lyubushkin levied a hit on Hall prior to the latter's punch. Lyubushkin did not return to the game for what the Maple Leafs called precautionary reasons. Hall scored his 15th goal of the season late in the third period of Boston's 6-4 loss to Toronto. The former Hart Trophy recipient also has 35 assists in 66 games this season. Jeannot, 24, was assessed a minor penalty for tr...

And then there were four. While Duke (32-6) and coach Mike Krzyzewski are authoring a storybook signoff as West Region champs, archrival North Carolina (28-9), the No. 8 seed in the East Region, crashed the Final Four and stands in the way of any epic sendoff the Blue Devils might have planned Monday night. The Tar Heels already spoiled Coach K's homecourt goodbye in a game coach Hubert Davis believes flipped the switch for what he felt was an underachieving team up to that point. When his group walks into the Superdome in New Orleans for the first time for a practice open to the public on Friday, he hopes they realize the gravity the Tar Heels defied to get here. "I don't think anything can be as crazy as the game leading up the game over in Cameron. As I said before, we keep our eyes straight ahead and we ignore all the noise," Davis said. "And I consistently tell them to turn down or turn off the noise of the phone, family and friends. If you do that -- ...

While the Brooklyn Nets were glad to escape with a win over the Detroit Pistons amid defensive struggles, the Milwaukee Bucks enjoyed their defensive display in the final minutes of a road win over the Philadelphia 76ers. Coming off those drastically different showings, the Nets and Bucks get together Thursday night in New York. The Nets (40-36) are moving towards clinching a play-in berth in the East. They entered Wednesday's action one game ahead of the Charlotte Hornets for eighth place. Brooklyn is 8-3 since March 8 following a 3-17 skid that dropped them into the play-in race. While the Nets have scored at least 120 in five of those eight wins, they also have allowed at least 120 points four times in the 11-game stretch. One of those instances occurred Tuesday when the Nets rallied for a 130-123 win over the Pistons. They needed 41 points from Kevin Durant to compensate in a game where they faced a 12-point deficit and did not get the lead for good until late in the fo...

The Ravens announced a three-year contract extension for head coach John Harbaugh that keeps him in Baltimore through the 2025 season. Terms were not disclosed. Harbaugh was entering the final year of his previous four-year deal signed in 2019. Owner Steve Bisciotti made the announcement at the NFL annual meetings in Palm Beach, Fla. "No interest in having him go lame duck on me here. It's not fair to him," Bisciotti said. "I think John's grown and grown and grown. It's kind of interesting. I don't feel like I'm just signing up the same guy. I think that's really a compliment to him. I really feel like there's a rebirth in John as the years go on. Things that mattered to him don't matter as much anymore. I'm just thrilled as an owner to have a guy that's going to be going into his 15th year. So, I'm pretty pleased with it." The 2022 season will be Harbaugh's 15th, making him the third-longest tenured coach in t...

Daniil Medvedev's path to regaining the world's top ranking runs straight into the defending champion of the Miami Open. Medvedev, the 26-year-old Russian who is the tournament's No. 1 seed, charged into the quarterfinals with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over the United States' Jenson Brooksby on Tuesday. Next up for Medvedev is a matchup against eighth-seeded Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, the reigning Miami Open champion. A victory in that match would assure Medvedev of moving back to No. 1 in the world next week, ahead of Novak Djokovic. The Serbian star is absent from Miami, as he was earlier this month from the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., because he is unvaccinated against COVID-19. Brooksby, who is ranked 39th, started well against Medvedev. The 21-year-old Sacramento native broke serve in the first game and led 5-3 in the opening set. However, Medvedev won the next four games to take the set, then jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set and wasn't th...

The announcement comes while Alec Baldwin is a part of the ongoing investigation into the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during the filming of western “Rust.” Although Baldwin fired the fatal shot, the prop gun was called “cold” by assistant director David Hall, which means that it had no live bullets. It was reportedly checked by armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed. Hilaria announced that they had faced many ups and downs in the last few years and that they had an “exciting and huge surprise: another Baldwinito is coming this fall.” This was the caption that she posted a video of her children playing with her and husband Alec Baldwin. The 38-year old yoga instructor and mother of six with actor-husband added that they were pretty sure that their “family was complete,” and that they were “beyond happy with this surprise.” She said that ...

Brock Nelson scored to begin a stretch of four unanswered goals by the visiting New York Islanders, who hung on Tuesday night to edge the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3. Josh Bailey, Anthony Beauvillier and Zach Parise also scored for the Islanders, who scored all their goals in a span of 17-plus minutes bridging the first two periods. Vladislav Gavrikov scored twice and Oliver Bjorkstrand had a goal for the Blue Jackets, who have lost four straight (0-2-2). Goalie Elvis Merzlikins recorded 25 saves. The Blue Jackets took a brief lead 7:20 into the first when Varlamov deflected a shot by Patrik Laine but couldn't scramble back into position fast enough to stop Gavrikov from poking home the rebound beyond Varlamov's stick. The Islanders began their flurry with a power-play goal fewer than five minutes later. Mathew Barzal's pass into the crease bounced off the skate of Anders Lee to Nelson....

Queen Elizabeth II, who is celebrating her platinum jubilee this year, attended a service in honor of her late husband Prince Philip at Westminster Abbey. She was emotional as the service celebrated 99 years of his life that he had dedicated to both his wife and Great Britain. The service was attended by a 1,800-strong congregation that included members of the royal family in Britain, with the exception of Prince William and Meghan Markle. Monarchs, mainly from Europe, dignitaries and people from the organizations under his patronage were also present at the service. They sang Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer following which the bells at Westminster Abbey rang out. This marked the end of the service. The Queen had tears in her eyes as the congregation sang hymns. She might have been remembering the momentous occasions in her life that had taken place at the Abbey. She had married Prince Philip in the same church in November, 1947. She was crowned the Queen of the U.K., here, just over 70 y...

The Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Clippers are mired in losing streaks at a bad point in the season, with one of those teams set to end their untimely slide when they meet at Los Angeles on Tuesday. Utah (45-30) has dropped four straight games while Los Angeles (36-39) has lost five in a row and eight of its last 10 games. The Jazz have slipped into fifth place in the Western Conference and wouldn't even host a playoff series if the season ended now. Their 114-110 road loss in Dallas on Sunday night allowed the Mavericks to move past them and into fourth place. The Denver Nuggets are lurking close behind and even the Minnesota Timberwolves -- currently situated in seventh place, part of the play-in round -- are in position to make a run. The Clippers have been eliminated from the top-six-seed derby after their recent slide and are lodged in eighth place. Los Angeles has been especially poor while losing its last three games by an average of 22 points. One of those setbacks ca...

In the big scheme of things, it's only one loss, but don't be shocked if the Edmonton Oilers have extra jump in their step when they play host to the Arizona Coyotes on Monday. The Oilers, who sit third in the Pacific Division, have been among the league's hottest teams the past couple of months, but they suffered a huge indignity in Saturday's 9-5 road loss to the Calgary Flames, a score that actually flattered them. "We'd spent the last five weeks or so trying to improve certain areas of our game, and I thought we got away from it and paid the price," coach Jay Woodcroft said of his team's dismantling in the Battle of Alberta clash. "Nine even-strength goals against, not good enough. We came into the Saddledome and scored five goals -- that should be enough to win a game -- but ... it wasn't about what we got, it was what we gave them." Edmonton actually opened the scoring in the first minute and saw Leon Draisaitl collect a hat...

Maybe opponents are tiring of the Nikola Jokic show, but the Denver Nuggets could use some more from their star player. Jokic and the Nuggets are aiming for a steady finishing stretch to the season, and a good opportunity awaits when they play the Charlotte Hornets on Monday night in Charlotte, N.C. "It's really hard to knock Nikola off his game," Denver coach Michael Malone said. The Nuggets (44-31) have seemed slightly rattled at times recently, losing three of their past five games. The setbacks came to Cleveland, Boston and Phoenix, with the victories against the Los Angeles Clippers and Oklahoma City Thunder. Even though Jokic's 35 points and 12 rebounds against Oklahoma City on Saturday night seemed almost routine, those types of contributions also are critical for the team. "You almost just assume the greatness is there every night," Malone said. "His consistency should never be taken for granted. It should be marveled at every single n...

In a season that's been all about development and growth, the Buffalo Sabres are starting to show what they've learned and look to keep rolling when they visit the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday. The Sabres have played beyond regulation in five straight games, going 3-0-2. They're coming off a 5-4 overtime loss to the New York Rangers on Sunday, their second straight defeat, a game in which they battled back twice to earn a point. "We're starting to figure out how to play every game," Sabres forward Kyle Okposo said. "And that's something that's a very hard thing to do. I'm not saying that we're there yet, because we're not. But we're starting to show some glimpses of it where we're sticking to our game no matter what. "I think that today was a testament to that, and I've said it a lot, a ton of times, that that's the mark of the truly good teams in this league, and we're showing signs of getting there. By ...

Rookie Corey Kispert shot 6-of-9 from 3-point range and scored a career-high 25 points to help the Washington Wizards past the Golden State Warriors, 123-115, on Sunday. Kispert's six 3-pointers -- also a career-high -- nearly matched Golden State's output from beyond the arc as a team. With Stephen Curry sidelined for the fifth consecutive game due to a foot injury, the Warriors shot just 8-of-33 from deep. The Wizards (32-42) went 16-of-28 behind the 3-point line, including 3-of-3 from Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who finished with 22 points; and 3-of-4 from Deni Avdija, who scored 14 points off the bench. Golden State's 3-point shooting woes contributed to a 42.7 percent overall performance shooting from the floor. Washington capitalized on the Warriors' offensive struggles, jumping ahead from the outset and never trailing. The Wizards' lead grew to as many as 18 points. That provided a cushion for when Golden State (48-27) made a late-game surge. Klay Tho...

Team Liquid emerged atop the League of Legends Championship Series Spring Split standings with a win on the concluding day of round-robin play. Liquid (14-4) won its third straight game, defeating TSM (5-13) to claim the top spot, while Cloud9 (13-5), which began the day tied for the lead, fell to FlyQuest (9-9). Third-place 100 Thieves (12-6) failed to capitalize on Cloud9's loss, losing to Dignitas (8-10) and staying third. Evil Geniuses (9-9) remained part of a three-way tie for fourth place by beating Counter Logic Gaming (6-12). Golden Guardians (9-9) was the third member of the tie after its win over Immortals (5-13).
